The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition is hosting Bike to Wherever Days — an annual celebration of local biking with free gifts and activities — from Thursday to Saturday.

The celebration began 30 years ago as Bike to Work Day to urge people to give biking a try and celebrate people who already do.

“If you combine events that encourage biking and bike safety, you reward people who already do and encourage people to just try,” said Penny Ellson, local bike advocate and coalition team member.

What started off as Bike to Work Day, which will kick off this weekend’s celebrations on Thursday, changed after the pandemic to include people who now work from home, hybrid or simply commute to school.

In Menlo Park, the city will host a Bike to the Library Day on Thursday, May 16, at the Main Library (800 Alma Street), from 2-5:30 p.m. Bike to Wherever Days are May 16-18. Stop by a city to Menlo Park-sponsored booth on Thursday, May 16, during Bike to Work Day to pick up a free 30th anniversary canvas bag.

On Thursday, bicyclists can stop at five energizer stations from 6:30-9:30 a.m. in Palo Alto for free treats, prizes and a chance to build community with other local bikers.

  • Wilkie Way Bike Bridge (Wilkie Way & Miller Avenue)
  • Downtown (Heritage Park on Bryant Street)
  • California Avenue Plaza (@ Park Boulevard)
  • El Palo Alto Park trail (near Palo Alto Avenue/Alma Street)

From 7:30-9:30 a.m. bikers can stop at:

  • The Hub (3215 Porter Drive)

Free breakfast will be served at the Wilkie stop and at the Hub.

People who pledge to ride on Bike to Wherever Days can show their free ticket at an energizer station to receive a free bike bag and are entered in a drawing for prizes from local bike shops.

While the event is a way to encourage people to try biking, it’s also a way to teach people safer biking tactics, Ellson said.

The coalition urges local bikers to use their map, which shows the safest local routes to bike.
