Easily accessible from Highway 101, Caltrain and El Camino Real, the Broadway district is a thriving yet quaint commercial corridor in Burlingame. Eateries for every palette and locally owned shops line the streets, where you will find colorful mews and walkways blending into the residential areas. Broadway is largely composed of independently owned businesses retaining their original Mission Revival and Classical Revival architecture, adding to the area’s character.

In fact, the city of Burlingame has its eyes set on developing the area further with the Broadway Specific Plan underway. Enhancements like increased retail and residential density, outdoor dining spaces and bike lanes have been explored by the community under this plan. In tandem with the Caltrain grade separation project for Broadway Station, which operates on weekends only due to traffic and safety concerns, the city’s goal is for the district to become more accessible and attractive for visitors.

Amidst the proposed changes and ongoing public transit improvements, Broadway offers pedestrian-friendly blocks ready to be explored.

Nature and history

Broadway Arch: Cross under the neon Broadway Arch to begin your visit. The arch has a century-long history with Burlingame, having  originally been erected on Howard Avenue at El Camino Real to promote the Pacific City amusement park at Coyote Point in 1922. The arch was installed in its current location in 1988 following a “Save the Arch” campaign by the Broadway Merchants Association.
