Menlo Park firefighters were called to a house on O’Keefe Street at 4:34 p.m. on Feb. 20. When they arrived, smoke and flames were billowing out the windows.

The fire started in a closet and was quickly extinguished, however smoke and heat damage was evident throughout the home. Photo courtesy Menlo Park Fire Protection District.

Firefighters arrived on scene six minutes after the call to find one room in the house “well involved” in flames, according to Menlo Park Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Jon Johnston. Two battalion chiefs, two trucks, two engines, one squad car and one fire investigator were called to the scene of the one-alarm fire. The Menlo Park Police Department helped control nearby traffic.

One person was in the house at the time the fire started. Johnston said that the smoke detector in the house went off, and when the homeowner went to check on the alarm, they found that a closet was on fire.

All occupants of the house, including pets, were evacuated safely. Neighbors called 911 to report the fire. Johnston said that only one room in the house, a bedroom, was fully involved in the fire. However, many of the other rooms sustained heat and smoke damage.

Fire crews were able to knock down the fire within approximately 20 minutes, but stayed on scene to ensure that no hotspots flared up.

Johnston told this news organization that the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but that no foul play is suspected.
