New champ same as old champ
Atherton police Chief Bob Brennan is nothing if not a good sport. After being trounced at chess last year by a 9-year-old, the chief gamely played the same boy, the winner of this year’s May 13 children’s chess tournament at the Atherton library. And once again, the chief reports, he was trounced, although the game lasted longer than last year’s.
“My strategy was to go much more slowly, so I probably lost in the same number of moves, but it took longer,” he said.
Disaster meeting a big success
Everyone loves a freebie. At a recent Atherton Civic Interest League annual meeting not only were experts discussing emergency preparedness, but residents were given family disaster supply kits to take home.Atherton resident John Ruggeiro said it was standing-room only at the Pavilion in Holbrook-Palmer Park on May 18, and estimated that about 300 people came to the meeting, more than he’s seen in years.
The disaster kits, worth $80 and containing supplies for a family of four, were the brainchild of ACIL President Richard Moore. All 125 were given away, with rain checks for families that left empty-handed.
