An exhibit called “Mel Lane: Champion of the California Dream” will open at the San Mateo County History Museum at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the old domed courthouse at 2200 Broadway in Redwood City.

The museum’s first newly designed exhibition for 2008 will be a Photo Tribute to Mel Lane, who died July 28 at 85.

Photographs on display will span Mr. Lane’s life from his childhood in Iowa, to selling new concepts of Western living through Sunset Books, to his enormous contributions to saving the natural environment of San Mateo County and California.

Mr. Lane, a longtime resident of Atherton, made historic contributions to saving California coastlines when he served as the first chairman of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission in 1965, followed by the California Coastal Commission in 1972.

Mr. Lane was also a huge fan and patron of Stanford University, and one of the founders and supporters of the Peninsula Open Space Trust, which has preserved close to 60,000 acres of natural open lands on the Peninsula.

Members of the Lane family will be attending the reception following the dedication.
