A planting of a Ginkgo biloba tree at the Boys and Girls Club of East Palo Alto recently honored the late Stuart Moldaw, a resident of Atherton, founder of Ross stores, and a major donor to the club. Mr. Moldaw, 81, died May 24 after a brief illness.
Mr. Moldaw’s wife, Phyllis, said that as the tree (known for its healing powers) is nourished, it will also help nourish the children of East Palo Alto and surrounding communities. The tree was donated by Roger Reynolds Nursery of Menlo Park.
Mr. Moldaw “had great feelings for young people and wanted to help them as much as he could to reach their potential,” she said.
The Moldaws and Dr. and Mrs. Alejandro Zaffaroni (who also attended the ceremony) donated funds to build the Moldow-Zaffaroni Clubhouse for the club. Dr. Zaffaroni is the founder of Alza Corp., long based in Palo Alto.
The tree-planting was part of a community festival to mark the 50th anniversary of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula.
