Ali El Safy, the owner of Bistro Vida and Bar Loretta, and his employees have decorated the future home of the new Downtown 600 Block Public Plaza with a large brightly lighted Holiday tree, a colorful banner and several new benches.

For years, Ali El Safy and his team have tirelessly worked to make the neglected public space in front of Walgreens, Talik and Starbucks a welcoming place to visit. Ali provided the now time-worn temporary street furniture that became so popular with Hillview students, and his employees have cleaned this public area every day – thankless work required because it is not regularly performed by our city. Ali has also remained the strongest advocate for the new community plaza. For example, he has offered to furnish and maintain a “quiet zone” where adults can comfortably sit alongside his outdoor dining area.

I hope residents take the time this holiday season to thank Ali and his employees for their efforts and contributions. Like many others, I consider them special friends.
