Jasmine Ahluwalia, the 31-year-old Palo Alto resident who died after being hit by a train in Menlo Park Monday (Jan. 2), was a post-doctoral researcher at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), a UCSF spokesperson confirmed Friday.
Ahluwalia was struck and killed on the tracks by a southbound train at Encinal Avenue around 7:37 p.m. Ahluwalia relocated from India to San Francisco and joined the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCSF in August 2011, UCSF spokesperson Elizabeth Fernandez said. Ahluwalia worked in the laboratory at UCSF’s Mission Bay campus and specialized in stem-cell research, Fernandez said.
In a written statement Monday, Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said, “Transit Police will continue investigating over the coming days to determine the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident. Although the facts are not yet certain, preliminary information suggests the person may have intentionally placed herself in the path of the oncoming train.”
As of Friday, results of the investigation had not yet been released.
Sixteen people died on the Caltrain tracks in 2011, according to Caltrain. Ahluwalia was the first fatality in 2012.
