A man with a semiautomatic handgun allegedly sexually assaulted a woman who was jogging in a residential neighborhood at Stanford University on Sunday evening, campus police said.
According to a warning bulletin from police, the woman was out jogging around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday near the intersection of Santa Ynez Street and Mayfield Avenue, a quiet residential area south of campus. The woman told university police that she was grabbed by a man who allegedly pushed her into a landscaped area at a nearby house and sexually assaulted her.
The man was described as wearing a light blue hoodie, dark jeans and a thick braided bracelet. He was also carrying a semiautomatic handgun in the waistband of his pants. In the warning bulletin, police also described him as being clean shaven, with brown eyes, darker skin and short hair.
It is not immediately clear if the woman was a Stanford student.
Bill Larson, a spokesperson for the campus Department of Public Safety, said in an email that the investigation is “very active” and that the department has increased patrols on campus.
Universities that participate in federal financial aid programs are required to report certain crimes on and near their campus under the Clery Act. In 2024, Stanford reported a total of 46 sex crimes, all of which occurred on campus.
Police ask anyone with information to call the Stanford University Department of Public Safety at (650) 329-2413.
