Mike Montgomery never has been too far removed from Stanford University, even when he left the men’s basketball program to take over the NBA’s Golden State Warriors in 2004-05.

Montgomery, a Menlo Park resident, has been a frequent visitor to Stanford basketball games — either as a spectator or as a television commentator since being fired by the Warriors last summer.

It should be no surprise, then, that Montgomery reportedly has landed another job at Stanford.

While the announcement is still yet unofficial, Montgomery will serve a multipurpose role in the Stanford Athletic Department this season. Montgomery won’t be coaching in 2007-08, but is expected to help with fundraising along with mentoring coaches — a job that will allow the veteran coach to continue working as a television analyst for regional basketball games during the college season.

Montgomery originally was thought to be headed for Santa Clara University upon his release from the Warriors, but ultimately wasn’t interested in that position or any other basketball job offered.

Montgomery, who coached the Stanford men’s team for 18 successful seasons and put the program on the national map, likely had a position waiting for him in the Stanford Athletic Department upon resigning his position in May of 2004 to take the ill-fated Warriors’ job.
