Sacred Heart Preparatory in Atherton celebrated its 128th graduating class at a commencement ceremony on May 21. This year, 157 students crossed the stage at Gator Nation Field.
The school’s Class of 2026 will be attending at least 74 different institutions of higher education. At least 68 will continue their studies in California, 88 will head out-of-state and one will be attending a school abroad, according to information provided by Sacred Heart. Students plan to pursue studies in STEM, visual and performing arts, humanities, business, media production and more.
One Sacred Heart graduate has enrolled in the U.S. Military Academy, three will be pursuing a gap year, one will attend a trade school and two plan to attend community college.
For 20 years, the athletics program has sent 15 or more students to play at the intercollegiate level. This year’s graduating class will send 25 athletes to play across 11 different sports.
Diplomas were presented to students by Marnie Marcin, chair of the Board of Trustees; Richard A. Dioli, director of schools; Jorge Reyes, assistant principal; and Jason Armstrong, assistant principal for athletics.
Speeches were made by Principal Jennie Whitcomb, Valedictorian Oskar Herlitz, salutatorian Marcus To and faculty speaker Armando del Rio.
“I beg you to build a life so vast and alive that fear can no longer shrink it. I beg you to protect the child in you that still looks at the world with those wonderstruck eyes and prove those scientists wrong,” Herlitz said. “And when the world tells you to become smaller, safer, more certain, I beg that you continue reaching anyway … fear nothing and stand in awe of everything.”
The day before the ceremony, the school followed its century-old tradition of awarding select students with Blue Ribbons, during its honors convocation and graduation mass. Ribbons are the highest honor given to graduating seniors and reflect outstanding achievement in academics and fulfillment in one or more of the school’s goals and criteria.
This year, 15 students received ribbons:
- Victoria Battistini, Matthew Bowers, and Charlotte Butcher were awarded for Goal I: A personal and active faith in God
- Kieran Armstrong and Brooke Soderbery received ribbons for Goal II: A deep respect for intellectual values
- Monserrat Avalos Franco and Charles Van Dyke were recognized for Goal IV: The building of community as a Christian value
- Patrick Boesen and Miguel William Espinosa were honored for Goal V: Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom
- Andre Freccia, Peyton Fu-Sarosa, and Robert Duke Tom each received a dark blue ribbon, for embodiment of all five Goals of a Sacred Heart education
Sacred Heart also recognized David Edelman, Jaiden Ghumman, Ario Hamrah, Brooke Soderbery and Katherine Ware, who earned recognition as National Merit Scholarship finalists.
