Early returns show Kathy McKeithen and Elizabeth Lewis in the lead in a four-candidate race for two seats on the Atherton City Council.
Incumbent Kathy McKeithen spent election night quietly at home with her husband, after working until 8 p.m. She was sanguine about early election results that put her in the lead just before 10 p.m. “I’m feeling fine. I’ve been feeling fine all along. It’ll be nice when it’s over one way or the other.”
“If I’m elected, I’ll do the best job I can,” she said. “If I’m not elected, that’s what the people want, and somebody else will hopefully do a good job.
Elizabeth Lewis didn’t answer her cell phone. She was in second place in the early returns.
Dick Moore just returned from his shift at the hospital, watching over his 4-year-old grandson who is recovering from open heart surgery. He confessed that he hasn’t been paying attention to election results. When told that he’s currently in third place, he said, “That’s what I expected.”
David Henig went with his wife and children to the Democratic headquarters in Santa Clara when the polls closed. A Barak Obama supporter, he said, “It was a great night.”
“As far as the local race, it’s not looking very good,” he said of early returns that showed him trailing in fourth place. “I’m not optimistic, but I’m hopeful the numbers will improve.”
Sam Goodman, while on the ballot, had dropped out of the race.
Update at 10:30 p.m. Nov. 4: With three precincts reporting, candidates David Henig and Richard Moore have switched places, with Mr. Henig now in third and Mr. Moore in fourth.
Kathy McKeithen and Elizabeth Lewis are holding on to their leads in first and second place, respectively.
