Former Menlo School tennis standout Dmitry Tursunov got used to a fast surface at the ABN Amro rather quickly, beating Arnaud Clement, 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round on Monday in Rotterdam.
“The first round is always difficult,” the 26-year-old Tursunov said. “You always have to find your rhythm and get accustomed to a new surface.”
Julien Benneteau of France also advanced, defeating Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 at the Ahoy stadium.
Top-ranked Rafael Nadal, who lost in doubles Monday, plays his first singles match since winning the Australian Open on Wednesday.
