‘Ken Peplowski: Unheard Bird’
Clarinetist and saxophonist Ken Peplowski showcases jazz great Charlie Parker’s unrecorded, long-lost string arrangements for a Stanford Jazz Festival performance, accompanied by strings and woodwinds. Peplowski has performed with everyone from Benny Goodman to Madonna and has released many recordings, as both a leader and a sideman. At Stanford, he’ll be joined by Adam Shulman on piano, Isaac Coyle on bass, Sylvia Cuenca on drums, Shaina Evoniuk, Michele Walther, Michael Sze on violin, Ivo Bokulić on viola, Byron Hogan on cello, Amy Ahn on harp, and Troy Davis on oboe.
July 6, 7:30 p.m., Dinkelspiel Auditorium, 471 Lagunita Drive, Stanford; $10-$52; stanfordjazz.org/event/ken-peplowski-unheard-bird.Â
Unauthorized Rolling Stones and Strange Daze
Imagine yourself back in the 1960s and hear favorite songs by The Rolling Stones and The Doors at the Guild Theatre this week when tribute acts celebrating both of those classic bands take the stage. Rudy Colombini and The Unauthorized Rolling Stones have been going strong since 2001, with Colombini’s performance being an homage to the legendary Mick Jagger. Strange Daze, meanwhile, pays tribute to The Doors and the late Jim Morrison, fronted by vocalist Max Schimm and promising both hits and deep cuts.Â
July 5, 8 p.m., The Guild Theatre, 949 El Camino Real, Menlo Park; $46-$81; guildtheatre.com.
Huney Knuckles
Wrap up a long weekend with some sunshiny soul in an even sunnier spot when four-piece Huney Knuckles brings a soulful sound as sweet, smooth and funky as its name to Portola Vineyards’ annual summer jazz series. The band’s stellar lineup features Kevin Wong on keyboard bass, drummer Darian Gray (who performed with Booker T Jones for nearly a decade and a half), guitarist Brian Sheu and Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Tony Peebles. The foursome released their debut album, “Huney Knuckles Scuffle,” in 2023 and regularly releases singles through a live video series, according to their website, and is recording with saxophonist Eddie M and vocalist Tony Lindsay. Audience members also get to enjoy some wine-tasting and are invited to bring a picnic (there are no tables, so guests are encouraged to bring blankets or beach chairs).
July 6, 5-8 p.m., at Portola Vineyards, 850 Los Trancos Road, Portola Valley; $24.25-$50.91; portolavineyards.com/summer-jazz.
