Ruth Davies’ Blues Night 
Bay Area bassist Ruth Davies is joined by guitarist Chris Cain for a night of soulful, Memphis-style electric blues as a part of the Stanford Jazz Festival. Blues guitar virtuoso Chris Cain has been compared to B.B. King and is known for his jazz-infused riffs and emotional storytelling, according to the festival. In addition to Davies and Cain, the lineup includes Kristen Strom on saxophone, John R Burr on keys, piano and organ, Danny Caron on guitar, Leon Joyce Jr. on drums. Davies has been a festival artist and Stanford Jazz Workshop faculty member for many years.

‘One (last) Night Only’ 
Foothill College’s theater arts department presents staged readings of classic and contemporary plays in what it’s calling a “Shakespeare-adjacent reading series.” The four plays included are the 16th-century anonymous morality-and-mortality play “Everyman;” “Everybody,” Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ modernized, updated take on “Everyman” (July 17); Andrew Shephard’s zany, epic comedy “The Shakespeare Conspiracy” (Aug. 6); and “Shakespeare & The Zombie Plague of 1590” by Richard Henry and Eric Hissom, a rock’n’roll comedy mashup in which Shakespeare must save the world from zombies conjured by his own characters (Aug. 7).

Story Is the Thing
On July 17, Kepler’s Books is hosting their signature reading series, called “Story is the Thing.” In this series, five Northern California authors – Kyle Edwards, Kate Folk, Beena Lamlani, Kirsten Menger-Anderson, and J.E. Weiner – will provide readings of their chosen works, host a Q&A and participate in a meet and greet reception. According to the event description, the featured works range from a “transporting” historical fiction following a young man sent to unfamiliar England as he fights for Indian independence to a “brilliantly bizarre” story of a woman who is sexually obsessed with airplanes.

John Fullbright
Oklahoma-based Americana singer/songwriter John Fullbright heads to Menlo Park for a performance at the Guild, part of his current tour of Western states. His most recent album, 2022’s piano-centric “The Liar,” is his third studio record, following “Songs” and “From the Ground Up.” He’s also released the live record “Live at the Blue Door.”

Author Julia Vee
Local author Julia Vee will be celebrating the publication of her new novel, “Pearl City: The Phoenix Hoard,” at Books Inc. Mountain View. “Pearl City” is the final installment of her Asian-inspired fantasy series, “The Phoenix Hoard.” The series’ first book, “Ebony Gate,” was a 2023 Golden Poppy Finalist for the Octavia E. Butler award. “Pearl City” follows heroine Emiko Soong as she fights to defeat a villain known as the General. Vee was born in Macao and grew up in Northern California, “raised by libraries,” according to the event description. The event features Vee in conversation with Bri of @Bri’sBookish, and is free to attend.
