Jlin: Akoma
Pulitzer Prize-nominated (for her work with Third Coast Percussion) composer Jlin performs selections from her 2024 Stanford Live co-commissioned album “Akoma” at Bing Concert Hall’s studio space this week, part of a brief Stanford residency for the musician. According to Stanford Live, Jlin “bends toward more acoustic sound materials in her new work developed during her Stanford spring residency and utilizing instruments from Stanford’s collection.”

The Shoreline Piano Trio
The Shoreline Piano Trio (Menghua Lin on piano, Sue-mi Shin on violin and Katie Youn on cello) perform a concert that celebrates “the piano’s expressive range through three distinctive voices,” according to the event website. The program is planned to include Mozart’s Piano Trio in B-flat Major, K. 502, Gabriela Lena Frank’s folk songs for piano and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in C Minor, Op. 66. The trio was formed in 2019 and played its first concert at the Palo Alto Art Center. The members all hold doctorates in music and are music educators as well as performers. The group takes its name from Shoreline Boulevard in Mountain View, where the musicians first met and collaborated.

Global Market and Multicultural Festival
EPACenter hosts a multicultural festival featuring live music from a Latin jazz ensemble led by innovative multi-instrumentalist Roger Glenn, traditional cultural dance performances, a folkloric workshop, art activities and a global market.

Aki Kumar’s Bollywood Blues
San Jose-based vocalist and harmonica player Aki Kumar mixes influences from blues, rock ‘n’ roll and country music with songs drawn from his Indian heritage. Joining him for his performance at Club Fox are band members Rome Yamilov, June Core and Randy Bermudes. According to Kumar’s website, he left his hometown of Mumbai, India, and moved to the U.S. with the plan of working as a software engineer but then fell in love with the sound of the blues, turning his focus to music and never looking back in the decades since. He’s toured internationally as well as performing locally, including at prominent Bay Area jazz festivals.

The Marcus Shelby Quartet: Odds Against Tomorrow
Bassist and bandleader Marcus Shelby is joined by Dillon Vado on vibraphone, Greg Jacobs on piano and Jemal Ramirez on drums for a performance honoring the Modern Jazz Quartet under the leadership of pianist and composer John Lewis from 1952 to 1997. The program’s title, “Odds Against Tomorrow,” comes from a song written by Lewis for a 1959 film noir. That quartet will include that piece, along with songs from the Modern Jazz Quartet’s repertoire such as “Django,” “La Ronde Suite,” “Bags Groove,” “Skating in Central Park,” “Concorde,” “Versailles,” plus the group’s original compositions and arrangements.

‘Isaac Mizrahi: HOORAY’
Designer, writer and performer Isaac Mizrahi, joined by a jazz band, returns to the Oshman Family JCC with his show “Isaac Mizrahi: HOORAY.” The show is described as “a soul-warming blend of music, humor and storytelling,” and audiences can expect a lively range of songs from Cole Porter to Billie Eilish. Mizrahi is perhaps best known as a fashion designer but he’s also written several books, hosted his own talk show and directed operas and classical music productions, among other endeavors.

Dvorak Cello Concerto
Palo Alto Philharmonic, with cellist Evan Kahn as guest soloist, performs Antonín Dvorak’s Cello Concerto, at a concert also including Jean Sibelius’ “Karelia Overture” and Benjamin Britten’s “Four Sea Interludes” from “Peter Grimes.” Khan is principal cellist of New Century Chamber Orchestra, Opera San José and the San Jose Chamber Orchestra.
