In the 1980s, artist Erika Knerr worked on murals for the Tropical Zone of New York’s Central Park Zoo. With “Understory,” the latest installation in Redwood City’s Art Kiosk, Knerr is revisiting the idea of creating the illusion of lush habitat constructed within a contained urban environment.
“Understory” uses muslin and sheer fabric and “is composed of airbrushed translucent panels, overlapping silhouettes, and fragments of foliage that hang in layers, creating a rainforest that can only be approached from the outside,” according to a press release. Knerr uses a paint made from hand-mixed coffee ink. “Sourced from a local independent grocery store’s donated end-of-day brew, the pigment ties the work to cycles of consumption, reuse, and sustainability,” the release states.
On view through April 12, Art Kiosk, 2208 Broadway, Redwood City, free; fungcollaboratives.com/understory.
