Fast-casual custom pizza chain Pieology has suddenly closed its Palo Alto location. A sign recently appeared in the windows that reads: "This location is closed."

Pieology opened at 2305 El Camino Real almost two years ago.

In an emailed statement, Pieology President Mike Nolan described the closure as one of the "smart, strategic decisions" the business has made to "progress and better the company."

"It is without question that as industry trends change and business goals evolve, focused and disciplined decisions become crucial to success," he said. "Over the course of the next year, we will be evaluating our market position and store performance to streamline the Pieology portfolio."

He did not immediately respond to a question about whether there was anything in particular about the Palo Alto market that led to the closure and if Pieology plans to close other locations. Most of the national franchised chain’s outposts are in Southern California, though there are others scattered throughout the Bay Area.

A very similar concept located blocks away from Pieology on California Avenue, Pizza Studio, also suddenly closed after about 15 months of business in 2016. The chain also shuttered a Mountain View location at the time.
