Durian-flavored Pocky, housemade Japanese sandwiches and fresh uni from Hokkaido are just some of the items you’ll find at Foster City’s newest Japanese grocery store.

Osaka Marketplace is opening in Foster City’s Edgewater Place Shopping Center Friday, Dec. 12. The 35,000-square-foot store will offer imported Japanese fish, wagyu beef, sake, snacks, pantry staples, beauty products and kitchenware, as well as housemade sushi, onigiri and yakisoba. This will be Osaka Marketplace’s second store, with the first established in Fremont in 2021.

What makes Osaka Marketplace different from other Japanese grocery stores in the area is that it imports fresh fish from Japan every week, according to general manager Kazuhiro Takeda. He thinks the market’s abundant produce and beauty section are particularly strong as well.

In the seafood section, find sea urchin (uni) from Hokkaido, ready-to-eat crab and a variety of Japanese sun-dried fish (himono). The meat section offers A5 grade Japanese wagyu beef, Berkshire pork and Japanese chicken (jidori), as well as prepared meat platters to use for hot pot (sukiyaki) and frozen sliced meat.

Over in the hot food section, find stands for Japanese-style salad, Chinese cuisine, a Japanese deli, handmade onigiri, Japanese-style sandwiches and a Japanese hot buffet with entrees starting at $10.99.

The snack section has ample flavors of KitKats (matcha latte, chocolate-orange, Mont Blanc, milk tea and more) and Pocky (chocolate-banana, chocolate-coconut, durian, peppermint and more). Also find a wide selection of pantry staples such as rice, soy sauce and miso.

The beauty section offers abundant makeup, hair care and skincare products, and a kitchenware section offers knives, pots, pans, spatulas and much more.

To celebrate Osaka Marketplace’s grand opening in Foster City, a variety of festivities will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday. Expect a taiko performance (Japanese percussion), Dassai sake ceremony, ribbon cutting and exclusive in-store promotions all weekend. Doors open at 10 a.m., and the first 100 shoppers Friday to Sunday will receive gourmet goodie bags.

Osaka Marketplace plans to open 12 additional stores over the next decade, with an outpost planned to open in Pleasant Hill in the summer.
