A Menlo Park man allegedly tried to swipe a frozen chicken from the offices of an East Palo Alto school district Tuesday, apparently not realizing a legion of police officers were patrolling the streets following recent vandalisms at two local grade schools.
Theodore Chastang, 47, was arrested just after 2 a.m. when police allegedly spotted him leaving the Ravenswood School District offices grasping onto the frozen chicken, East Palo Alto police said.
Officers said he was also in possession of burglary tools.
Chastang was booked into an area jail.
Police credit the arrest to increased patrols following the ransacking burglary of two Ravenswood School District grade schools over the holiday weekend.
The vandals severely trashed Edison-McNair Academy, smashing windows, televisions and computer screens and splashing gang-related graffiti on at least one wall. They also caused significant damage at nearby Cesar Chavez Academy.
Police arrested a juvenile Tuesday in connection with the vandalisms. They said the boy left behind a Polaroid photograph of himself at the crime scene.
Police are searching for more suspects.

I’m going to start working on a post-modern version of Les Miz featuring a guy who steals a chicken from a public school.
