The staff at Palo Alto’s Gamble Garden is asking the public for help finding a missing statue of a frog. They have received no leads since the statue disappeared two weeks ago.
The 12-inch statue, made of dark cast stone, was donated in memory of a 4-year-old boy who loved frogs and visited the garden frequently with his mother, Executive Director Vanessa Roach said.
On either Sunday, Oct. 4, or Monday, Oct. 5, the statue, which was attached to a small fountain and acted as its spout, was removed from its base. Roach said no evidence was found. Police were contacted but because the park is a public space without any security little could be done, she said.
The statue was located in the Shade Garden area of the park, at 1431 Waverley St.
Roach still hopes the statue will be returned.
“If anyone knows anything, please call. Or please leave him on our front steps, no questions asked,” she wrote in a plea to the local neighborhood association.
“We are deeply saddened that someone would take this treasure and just ask for its safe return,” she said.
The 2.5-acre Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden is run by a nonprofit horticultural foundation. It is open daily. Anyone who has information can contact Gamble Gardens at 650-329-1356.
