Demolition has begun on the 104-unit building located at 2700 Middlefield Road that was engulfed by flames on Monday, June 3, according to a press release from the James E. Roberts-Obayashi Corporation, the construction company working on the site at the time of the blaze.

Construction has also restarted on the second building in the affordable housing development, a 75-unit apartment building and childcare center, which was spared by the fire.

Following the fire, neighbors reported finding chunks of burned material in their yards.

“All of us at James E. Roberts-Obayashi Corporation are aware of the inconvenience this may have caused the public and want to make sure you know that we immediately reported this matter to our insurance carrier(s),” said Scott Smith, president and CEO of the James E. Roberts-Obayashi Corporation in the press release. “They are in the process of investigating this matter and are aware that your properties may have experienced some element of damage.”

According to the press release, members of the public who experienced impacts from the fire or have questions regarding potential impacts can contact Richard Kenney, Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc., at (603) 634-1518 or Richard.Kenney@sedgwick.com, referencing claim number 4A240655Q39-0001.

“We recognize the inconvenience that the fire may have had on our neighbors and appreciate your patience. We remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that any concerns or questions are addressed in as timely a manner as possible,” said Smith in the press release.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, and the incident is under investigation. The Menlo Park Fire Protection District has asked that anyone with information contact them at (650) 688-8400.

Investigators are also looking for videos and photos of the incident, particularly from the early stages of the blaze, to aid in the investigation.
