Sixty teenage students from the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula participated in a unique learning opportunity with English Premier League Chelsea FC players.
Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula includes children from up and down the Peninsula, including kids from schools in Menlo Park, Redwood City and East Palo Alto.
The event was organized with the U.S. Soccer Foundation, English Premier League Chelsea FC, FICO, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula.

The student participants were chosen for having participated in the BGCP summer programs: the High School Coach Em Up Program and the High School Soccer Program.
On the first day, July 24, the students participated in a financial literacy course followed by free admission to the Chelsea and Wrexham match at Levi’s Stadium.
In the financial literacy program, the students learned how to manage a budget, understand credit, and know what an FICO score measures.
The following day, Chelsea players Raheem Sterling, Levi Colwill, Armando Broja, and Marcus Bettinelli visited a BGCP site to give the students live soccer skills demonstrations, led them through drills, and had a questions and answers session with the students.
“This opportunity came to us through our U.S. Soccer Foundation partnership,” said the sports league coordinator at the Boys and Girls of the Peninsula, Jose Lopez. “We have been working with the organization for a while now and Chelsea reached out to them to find an organization in the area that would be able to benefit from the events.”
FICO and Chelsea FC have partnered during the club’s summer tour of the U.S. to bring wider access to financial literacy education. Through a series of workshops, they aim to improve their knowledge of credit and personal finance.
