As recommended by public safety advocates, residents of Lexington Drive in Menlo Park saw something on the morning of Monday, June 8, and then they said something.

A call to police resulted in the arrest of Christopher Sheard, 20, and Brandon Fields, 20, both of East Palo Alto, on charges of residential burglary and conspiracy to commit a crime, according to Menlo Park police.

The incident began when two residents noticed a man loitering in the front yard of a neighbor who was known to be away from home, police said. When another man showed up and the two then went into the backyard of that neighbor’s house, the residents called police.

Officers arrived and set up a perimeter around the house, actions that did not escape the attention of the two men inside the house, police said. They were ordered outside and were apprehended at the front door, police said.

The house had been ransacked, police said, and possessions allegedly belonging to the two men were found inside the house. A vehicle allegedly belonging to the two men was found nearby, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call Menlo Park police at 650-330-6300, or the anonymous tip hotline at 650-330-6395.

  1. Well done to the neighbors who alerted the police, and well done to the police for peacefully catching the criminals.

  2. We know our own neighborhoods better than anyone else, so it’s easy to see when something is amiss. It’s awful to be so suspicious but it’s better to err on the side of caution than to be sorry later. Nice to see how the MPPD handled the burglary and the resolution that resulted.
