Editor’s note: This week’s introduction is about pet loss.
Halloween and Día de los Muertos festivities are the focus of the events calendar this weekend. It will be the first weekend in several years without my black cat by my side.
Hermione left this world in the same place we met: in our backyard basking in sunlight. She was there when my husband and I moved in nearly six years ago, a mainly outdoor senior cat that we quickly befriended. When she developed a respiratory issue, we found out that Hermione’s owners had moved away without her and we adopted her. From then on, she was our constant companion.
Hermione transformed our world. We connected anew with people over cats as first-time feline owners, picked up cat sitting and fostered a kitten we found in our yard. We unearthed a new portal to joy and unconditional love, and even with the void left by her death, that portal will forever remain open. We are cat people now.
She is gone, but she is everywhere: in Halloween decorations, in my black cat tchotchkes and in countless photos and memories. I am bereft without her, but buoyed by the love she left with us.
