This week’s newsletter features two profiles of Peninsula residents who founded businesses inspired by their own lives and a dearth of available options.

Foster City resident Chris Horng’s company de-tea sells decaffeinated teas, sourcing them from farmers in regions of Taiwan and China that specialize in green and black varieties. Utilizing his background in engineering, he spent a year or two exploring ways to decaffeinate tea, settling on the supercritical CO2 method. The inspiration for de-tea began brewing about six years ago, when Chris switched to drinking tea after coffee caused acid reflux but found the caffeine content left him too wired at night.

And Redwood City resident Amy Bearman is the founded of BurbleBox, which offers rentals of curated baby and toddler toys. Amy was already a fan of rental services for clothing and sustainable options like refilleries for kitchen goods. She posted in a few Bay Area parenting groups asking if anyone knew of a business offering a similar model for toys, asking if they’d be interested in using one if it was available. She put up a waitlist and had about 100 sign-ups of potential customers within a few days. Find Karla Kane’s stories behind these local businesses below.

‘I realized there was a lot of demand for this’: A new Peninsula business offers rentals of curated baby and toddler toys

A desire to avoid filling up her house with unwanted stuff that her daughter would soon outgrow led Redwood City resident Amy Bearman to start her business BurbleBox.

Congrats to Leilani G., who was the first reader to correctly identify where last week’s photo was taken (it’s the beach below the Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay!).
