October is here! And for the Bay Area, so is an autumn heat wave. Speaking of “roasting” weather, I rely on plentiful iced lattes to help me stay cool in situations like these (OK, and in pretty much all situations) and luckily we’ve got a lot of local options for getting good coffee. Of course, before those beans become the magic brew in our mugs, they need to be roasted; this week, Edwina Dueñas gives us the scoop on 10 Peninsula coffee roasters.
Even though it’s not until the end of the month, Halloween tends to dominate October calendars. However, there are plenty of non-Halloween events to look forward to and Six Fifty Editor Julia Brown is keeping us in the know. On the other hand, I’m happy to think about witches, haunted houses and cats at any time of year, so I was excited to talk to author and Los Altos High alum Amanda Glaze about her spooky new YA novel, “The Lies of Alma Blackwell.”
I’ll end this message with a brief shout-out to the mighty banana slug: Congratulations on becoming an official state symbol!
Feeling sluggish,

There’s so much to do this month, we carved out an events guide to everything leading up to Halloween.
Meet the Peninsula-raised author of ‘The Lies of Alma Blackwell’
Amanda Glaze reflects on her teen years in Los Altos, her career in Hollywood and how a mysterious local landmark helped inspire her latest YA novel.
What’s brewing? 10 Peninsula coffee roasters for beans and beverages
With no shortage of coffee shops on the Peninsula, you might wonder what differentiates a roaster from a coffee shop. The difference lies in roasters being one step closer to the journey from coffee seed to cup.

No one was able to correctly identify where last week’s photo was taken (it’s Moss Beach Park!).
