I long ago lost track of how many times I’ve driven the stretch of Highway 1 between Half Moon Bay and Pescadero. I’ve memorized my favorite vistas and beaches, farm stands and eateries, shops and hiking spots. I appreciate the nuances between the higher-populated areas that give way to more rural coastal landscape as you drive south. When the road rises and winds through cliffs and marshland appears on the left side of the road, I know I’m in one of my favorite coastal spots.

Pescadero may have a quieter feel than Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, but don’t mistake that for a lack of things to do. You may already heard about (or quickly devoured) artichoke bread from Arcangeli Grocery Co. and visited Harley Farms’ baby goats, but you could easily spend a day (or a weekend) in Pescadero exploring all the historical landmarks, shops, beaches and more. The winter is an especially good time to go for bird-watching and elephant seal guided walks at Año Nuevo State Park, which run through March 31. Bookmark Edwina Dueñas’ guide and head out on a South Coast staycation.
