Authorities made an arrest after a break-in at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory campus on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 5, according to a press release from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were dispatched to the campus on Sand Hill Road in unincorporated San Mateo County around 8:30 p.m., after receiving a report of a suspicious person seen carrying bolt cutters on the property.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, as deputies checked the property, they located a person matching the description of the person with bolt cutters. That person proceeded to run toward Interstate Highway 280, according to the release.
With the help of a search dog, deputies located the person hiding in heavy shrubbery. Deputies also found “numerous burglary tools” and a damaged security fence in the area. The person was arrested on charges of attempted burglary, vandalism, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest.
“SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory would like to thank the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and our security team for their quick response to this incident,” said Aaron Groff, a spokesperson for the laboratory in an email to this news organization.
