The Hassett Ace Hardware store in Redwood City announced on Dec. 16 that its Woodside Plaza location will be temporarily closed after a vehicle crashed into the building and caught fire on Monday evening.
Fire officials told this news organization that no one was injured from the incident. The store however, “suffered extreme fire and water damage,” and does not have access to electricity, water or gas, according to store a press release and social media post.

Other media outlets reported that the driver crashed into the store after mistakenly stepping on the gas pedal instead of the brakes. The car flew through the store’s front windows, crashing into the store registers and a display of butane tanks. Seconds later, flames began to rise.
The store owner shared on Facebook that the car came close to one of its employees, his young daughter and a customer waiting in line.
“We are so thankful no one was injured or hurt and we owe a debt of gratitude to our incredible team who acted quickly and bravely to help the driver out of the car, extinguish what fire they could and shuttle customers and employees to safety outside the building. We feel incredibly lucky,” said owner Eric Hassett in a written statement.
Hassett is not sure when he will be able to reopen but said customers can still shop at other Hassett Ace Hardware locations in Palo Alto, San Mateo, Carlmont, Half Moon Bay and Pacifica.
