A team of 8-12 year-olds from the Menlo-Atherton Little League reached the title game of the Super Bowl Minors All-Star tournament on June 28 before losing to the Palo Alto National League All-Stars in the final contest.

In the 20 years that the Menlo-Atherton Little League had been participating in the Minor and Major Super Bowl games, none of its teams had ever reached the final round before, said League President Robert Crowe.

The single-elimination tournament was made up of 15 teams from District 52, which stretches from just south of San Francisco to Palo Alto.

The team won two of its first three games in convincing fashion, dispatching two clubs — Redwood City American and San Carlos — by mercy rule, 14-4 and 10-0. The rule states that the game will be called when one team leads by 10 runs or more after the fourth inning.

Menlo-Atherton came from behind in the sixth inning of the second game to beat Redwood City, 8-6.

Scott Barnum, Jon Duane and Brian Iwashita coached the team.

According to Barnum, this All-Star tournament is one of four that the Menlo-Atherton Little League is involved in each year.

“The idea is to give as many kids as possible a chance to compete at a higher level of play,” Barnum said.
