The Gunn boys’ soccer team continues to win despite losing its top offensive threat from a year ago to graduation.
Other players have assumed leadership roles and new players have shown their ability to play at a high level. On Tuesday it resulted in a 2-0 victory over host Mountain View in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division contest.
For leadership, there’s senior Nickolas Romero, who gave the Titans (2-0-1) the early lead, alertly following a shot by freshman teammate Marcello Chang that bounced off the Spartans’ goalkeeper and into Romero’s path.
Senior Joey Cianfichi sparked the scoring play with a pass to Chang at midfield. Chang deftly avoided a handful of defenders and got off a clean shot that the goalkeeper dove to deflect before Romero slammed the ball into the back of the net.
In the second half, junior Maxime Bromberg dribbled through defenders at the top of the box before shooting a direct shot into the back of the net.
