The Stanford women’s soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 nonconference victory over host Cal Poly on Thursday.

The Cardinal won its 11th consecutive season-opener and is 14-0-1 on opening day since 2007, this year thanks to goals from Abby Greubel and Maya Doms and a dominating defensive performance.
Stanford goalkeeper Katie Meyer needed to make one save to record her 14th career shutout, 10th on the school’s all-time list.
Stanford opens its home schedule against CSUN on Thursday at 7 p.m.
“The team had a solid performance tonight,” Cardinal coach Paul Ratcliffe said. “We did an excellent job of controlling the game and created some good scoring opportunities. Overall, it was a great start to the season.”
Greubel scored Stanford’s first goal, converting a free kick in the 16th minute. Doms scored on a penalty kick 17 minutes later.
Stanford outshot Cal Poly 16-7, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal.
In related news, Stanford senior Naomi Girma is one of 59 NCAA Women’s Division I college soccer players named to the 2021 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List.
The Hermann Trophy is the nation’s highest individual honor recognizing the nation’s National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.
Girma, the 2019 Pac-12 Defender of the Year, missed the 2020-21 season due to injury. The 2020 U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year was a 2019 All-America first team selection and earned College Cup Most Outstanding Defensive Player honors after helping to guide Stanford to the national title in 2019.
