The Menlo School boys water polo team finished eighth at the 16-team S&R Sports Cup in Irvine, dropping games to Long Beach Wilson 13-8 and Corona del Mar 11-10 on Saturday.
Jack Murad recorded five goals and five blocked shots on the day. Goalie Finn Byrne made a combined 17 saves for Menlo (8-7), which plays St. Francis in a WCAL match Wednesday. The schools are tied for second place.
Tommy Kiesling and Greg Hilderbrand each had four goals on the day and Jackson Kay had three.
The Sacred Heart Prep girls beat Acalanes 14-3 in a non league match played at Soquel High.
Ella Woodhead scored seven goals and Natalia Szczerba had eight assists against the East Bay power.
Acalanes was named the NorCal Team of the Year for 2019 after finishing undefeated for the second straight season. Acalanes won 59 straight before losing last season.
Brienz Lang added three goals and three assists and Ashley Penner had a air of goals and an assist.
Sacred Heart Prep meets Buchanan in the first round of the Arroyo Grande Fall Classic on Thursday afternoon.
Cross country
The Woodside boys placed three runners among the top four to earn the Large School title of the Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay on Saturday. Sequoia was third and Menlo-Atherton ran fifth.
The Menlo-Atherton girls had all five scoring runners place among the top eight to win the Large School Division.
Woodside’s Ethan Brooks and Maxmilian Hohendor placed 1-2 at Half Moon Bay High in 12:06 and 12:13 respectively. Nayan Smuek was fourth in 12:26.
Sequoia’s Ethan Bae ran third in 12:24 and Jackson Bae placed 12th in 12:52. M-A’s top runner was Rowan Pecson, who finished 14th in 12:56.
Woodside’s Elle Marsyla won the girls race in a time of 14:03. M-A’s Tatum Olesen was second in 14:10.
Anne Pflaum ran fourth in 14:37, followed by M-A teammates Sofia Melani (14:41), Katriona Briggs (14:43) and Katie Lorenz (145P48).
Mira Goodwin was Sequoia’s top runner, placing 27th in 16:37.
Elsewhere:
Perry McElhinney finished fourth as an individual and Castilleja was fourth as a team at the Serra Crystal Springs Invitational on Saturday.
Castilleja collected 136 points to winner Dougherty Valley’s 50. St. Francis (154) was seventh and Mountain View (170) placed eighth.

McElhinney, who finished the 2.95 mile course in 18:40.5, was one of three Castilleja runners in the top 21. Daniella Henderson was 12th in 19:43.9 and Samira Kennedy was 21st in 20:23.3.
Mountain View’s Eliana Montgomery ran 14th in 19:49.9 and Carolyn Smith was 24th in 20:44.3, just ahead of St. Francis’ Lily Eulate and Skylar Brodie.
In the boys race, Jack Sloan placed 13th to help St. Francis finish third with 153 points. Dougherty Valley (77) also won the boys race.
Mountain View was 11th, with Nicholas Trepainer its top runner with a 14th place finish in 16:07.7.
