Several lanes of southbound Interstate 280 south of Alpine Road were closed for several hours after a traffic collision Monday afternoon seriously injured a California Highway Patrol officer.

The crash happened at 2:17 p.m. when the officer, who was conducting a traffic break to clear debris, was hit by a 2026 Tesla Model Y, according to a CHP press release. The officer was ejected from his motorcycle and sustained major but non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Stanford Hospital.

The collision occurred south of the Alpine Road exit in unincorporated Santa Clara County.

The Tesla driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. CHP said the driver did not yield to the officer despite his emergency lights being activated. CHP’s Golden Gate Division Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is handling the investigation. It is not yet known whether any Tesla Advanced Driver Assistance Systems were active at the time of the crash.

Three southbound lanes of I-280 were closed during the investigation but reopened Monday night.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office previously advised motorists to use alternate routes and expect long delays. Significant traffic was reported on surrounding roads.
