Graduation day 2006 has come and gone at Woodside High School. While the music was familiar, the names of the graduates articulated in the air above the football field will not be heard again in that order and in that place.
The Class of 2006 assembled on Bradley Field at 10 a.m. Friday, June 9, while the school band played the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” under the direction of Rob Baker, who also led the band in the national anthem.
Senior class president Jessica Ingersoll welcomed the guests and introduced senior speakers Felicity Adler and Vida Rivera, the titles of whose speeches, respectively, were “Time and the Great Conveyor Belt” and “Collecting the Memories.”
The gift to the school from Class of 2006 is a mural for the new gym; that part of the ceremony was presided over by seniors David Lari, Kali Portlock and Vida Rivera.
The nine 2006 valedictorians, introduced by Principal Linda Common, gave a serial speech entitled “In Your Hands.” The speakers were Kyle Arshakuni, Emily Beugelmans, Diana Douglas, Amy Fochetti, David Lari, Karina Mudd, Gregory Olsen, Hanna Song and Tristan Zier.
Presenting diplomas this year were Gordon Lewin, president of the Board of Trustees of the Sequoia Union High School District; Marilyn McBride, vice president of instruction at Canada College; Debra Moore Washington, assistant superintendent for human resources and professional development for the Sequoia district; and Ms. Common.
The names of the graduating students were read by 24 seniors. The ceremony ended with Ms. Ingersoll leading the class in the symbolic switching of tassels from left to right.
The program paid tribute to Ian Robert Jepson, who died in 2001 after an accident. Ian would have graduated with the Class of 2006.
