“Girl power” is growing and it’s contagious in the Menlo-Atherton Little League Majors Division, reports Monica Newman of Menlo Park.

Her daughter, Kari Newman, 12, hit a home run for the Majors team, Brix, on April 23 at Burgess Park.

She is the second girl to hit a home run for the M-A Majors Division. Just six days earlier, on April 17, Emma Health, 11, of Menlo Park hit a homer at Burgess Park for Draeger’s.

Emma is the first girl in the league to hit a home run, according to members of the M-A Little League board, reports Emma’s mother, Cathy Friedman Duane. (See the May 2, 2007, issue of the Almanac, Page 19.)

“There are three girls in the Majors this year, and all are having strong seasons,” says Monica Newman.

Her daughter Kari is in her third season with Brix, a team coached by Kari’s father, Keith Newman, and Larry McGill.

The homer gave Brix an early 2-0 lead and propelled Brix over Lutticken’s 6-4 in a well-played game with good pitching from Colin McGill for Brix, says Monica Newman.

Nick Hidalgo has also homered for Brix this year, she says. The team is in second place and is led by other senior talent, Jack and Robert Larsen and Sam Crowder.
