A Redwood City man has been charged with the armed robbery of Tri-E-Z Foods & Liquor, a convenience store located in Menlo Park near the Atherton border at 1820 El Camino Real.
The store owner told police that he had been robbed at gunpoint at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, and that the robber had left the store and fled south on foot. There was no one else in the store at the time and there were no injuries, police said.
At about 10:45 p.m., with the help of a K-9 unit from the Atherton Police Department, Menlo Park police discovered and arrested Kelvin Chappelle, 24, who was hiding near a bus shelter on El Camino about two blocks south of the incident, Officer Louis Tommei of the Menlo Park Police Department said.
Police said Mr. Chappelle surrendered without a fight and was booked into San Mateo County jail on robbery charges. Police said they recovered the money and other key pieces of evidence taken in the robbery.
