Help Make Mid-Peninsula News Free for Everyone

For more than 60 years, The Almanac has been a trusted source of local news and information for Mid-Peninsula communities: Atherton, Woodside, Menlo Park, and Portola Valley.

We believe everyone in the Mid-Peninsula should have access to reliable local news, not just those who can afford a subscription or membership. That matters every day, and especially in an election year, when people need accurate, trusted information to make informed decisions about their communities.

Removing our paywall will give everyone in our community free access to the local journalism they need, regardless of their ability to pay. It will also give us the opportunity to build broader community support through voluntary contributions, helping create a more sustainable model for nonprofit local journalism.

Your support can help make Mid-Peninsula news a public good. Please join us in unlocking nonprofit news and keeping our community informed, connected, and thriving.

A word from our CEO, Adam Dawes, about the evolution of Embarcadero Media Foundation

In September 2022, I took over as CEO with a clear priority: to secure the future of Embarcadero Media Foundation and its mission. In January 2024, we became a nonprofit organization to serve our community better and guarantee our independence.

Our next step, to further align with our mission, is to permanently remove the paywall from our seven local news sites, ensuring everyone has free access to independent, fact-based journalism.

Currently, these paywalls restrict the number of times readers can access our content each month. When readers pay to become members, they gain access to local news across all seven of our publications and help provide a portion of the revenue needed to keep us operating in the black.

While we will continue to fundraise in our usual manner for our general fund, which contributes to our overall sustainability, our campaign to Unlock Nonprofit News will raise additional donations to help build the financial foundation needed to drop our paywall by the end of the year.

Please consider supporting your community with a donation, a matching grant, or other options like donor-advised funds, IRA contributions, and appreciated stock.

Sincerely,
Adam Dawes
