Cheryl Burke, a 2002 graduate of Menlo-Atherton High School and a well-known professional dancer on the TV show “Dancing with the Stars,” was to be the co-host of the Miss USA pageant on July 19, but no longer.

“In light of the recent statements made by Donald Trump and the subsequent decision by NBC to cut ties with Mr. Trump, I cannot in good conscience move forward with participating in this year’s Miss USA Pageant,” Ms. Burke posted on her Facebook page on June 30.

She was referring to remarks by business mogul Donald Trump in announcing his run for president, which included allegations about the criminal character of immigrants crossing the border from Mexico.

The immigrants, he said, were “bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people”.

Mr. Trump is a co-owner of the pageant. Joining Ms. Burke in separating herself from the pageant is her co-host, MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts.

Ms. Burke was raised in Atherton and also graduated from La Entrada Middle School and Las Lomitas Elementary School.

  1. Good for Ms. Burke. I’m glad to see the utter sh*^storm of bad publicity re Trump trumpeting his nasty racism. Way to represent, Cheryl!

  2. I wish that the “jk” in J Kidd Cab stood for just kidding because how else can one interpret a statement that reads: Donald Trump represents real America. Wow.

Actually, “real America” is a melting pot. All of us are the sons and daughters of immigrants from all over the world. Whether we came from Europe or Africa or Asia or elsewhere, at one point someone in our family crossed these borders too.

Donald Trump is a selfish, boorish bigot and racist. Fortunately, he does not represent real America.

There are plenty of us in this area who are highly educated, progressively liberal on social, environment and education issues while still valuing some fiscal conservatism. In fact, most Americans are strikingly similar in their values. It’s only on the fringe where we differ.

Donald Trump is on the fringe. He is now seeing what happens when you espouse bigoted and racist views.

  3. Progressive Voice — “Donald Trump is a selfish, boorish bigot and racist. Fortunately, he does not represent real America.”

Unfortunately, Donald Trump represents a portion of America — the portion of America embodied by J Kidd Cab, one of our resident right-wing trolls on this site.

One can only hope that Trump’s mouth sinks his candidacy, and his political ambitions.

  4. Donald Trump does not represent the Republican party. He is a bigot and a grandstander. We have an immigration problem but to slander Mexicans only throws fuel on the fire. Most Mexicans immigrate to this country for a better life. For the most part they are hard working, hones, kind, and caring people and have done much to enrich our great country. Bienvenidos Mexicanos. Ojala que trendreis una vida buena en los estados unidos.

  5. Donald Trump is amazing! He is a doer ! He gets things done and done well! He works with people from all economic levels and has a better understanding than most of us who live in this bubble called Silicon Valley.
How would Cheryl feel if she was a contestant in the Miss America contest and it was cancer because people want to limit trumps right to free speech? She has to be PC but , if she was a contestant, how would she feel? Who are we hurting? Certainly not Donald. He will be just fine and is rising in th polls.

  6. We all like and welcome hard working, law abiding new comers to this country. Some of us are not pleased with law breakers which all illegals are when they enter our country illegally. Why do we not talk more about the very corrupt Mexican government? Why do such a large number of their citizens want to leave ? Why are they willing to risk their lives to escape ? Why is Mexico such a bad place to live? Why do we not put pressure on Mexico to clean up its act so people do not have to leave? It’s a beautiful, rich ( in many ways) country but obviously corrupt to the max ! I’m sure the corrupt politicians there love to see their poor leave, what a sad situation that we seldom ever talk about !

  7. Donald Trump is a real American, if real American’s inherit massive fortunes, declare bankruptcy numerous times and have 3 wives (progressively younger). He is a terrible candidate and spokesperson for the Republican Party. This tactic has been used for a long time, in the 1800’s the Irish and Italians immigrants were reviled and persecuted. They were also fleeing poverty and looking for a better life. Mr. Trump is part of a long tradition of scapegoating the weak, look up the Nativist movement from that period (they were called, ironically, the Know Nothings) and you will see the same sentiments and fear of immigrants taking over the country. IMHO, the tradition of immigration and the melting pot of America is what makes us a great country. Trump is a small, mean man who represents and speaks for a very few. The Republican Party would do well to rid themselves of him.

  8. Donal trump has never gone Bankrupt. A few, maybe four of his business ventures did not succeed but out of the many he has tried I think he has a fine record, in business. How many Silicon Valley companies has failed? He has great kids and thousands of employees who seem to adore him, how can that be if he is so bad?
Maybe a lot of you didn’t pay attention to the last couple elections. Things have not gone so well for the Dems. The GOP is now in control of both houses and almost a certainty the White House at the next election. Will it be Trump? I doubt it but that would be so much better than the liar and extremely corrupt Hillary, don’t you agree ?

  9. If the republicans want to have any chance of winning the White House, they need around 40 percent of Hispanic vote. Romney got 27%. If Trump stays around for too long, the next nominee will get even less. I don’t really care who the nominee is on the Republican side, just think that Trump is bad for the country. I’ll refrain from posting numbers of how Democratic nominee has won last 5 out of 6 popular national elections. Can’t see that changing in 2016, but good luck!

  10. Cheryl Burke dropped out of M-A to pursue her performing career. I guess it worked out for her, but not the best role model for our kids?

  11. From the Almanac (google it)-
M-A 2002 graduates under B-“Cheryl Stephanie Burke, Palkina Donnette Burrell”

I saw her dance in the Senior fashion show that year. She graduated, maybe you can delete your rather mean spirited post “The Graduate”?

  12. Who is the Troll? What are you talking about? Stop It, Stop It, Stop What ??? I’m 1/4 Native American, only finished the 11th grade but was able to move to the Bay Area 30 yrs ago and now live on a $4.5M house which is free of debt. Where else can this happen? I love this country and our system of capitalism as do thousands of immigrants so why do people like yourself feel jealous or angry when someone achieves success? We are the light on the hill, a beacon of hope to so many who have risk everything to be able to come and share in the opportunity our system provides. What would you like to see changed ?????

  13. Progressive voice: “All of us are the sons and daughters of immigrants from all over the world. Whether we came from Europe or Africa or Asia or elsewhere, at one point someone in our family crossed these borders too.”

Yup, mine did so legally. I think yours probably did too.

Republican: “Most Mexicans immigrate to this country for a better life.”

Of course they do. So does everyone who comes here. Doesn’t mean illegal immigration should be tolerated.

Donald Trump spoke his mind in an unfiltered way. Many have knocked him for it. You can also look at it favorably, in terms of an honesty about communicating what he believes versus what is politically correct or what people want to hear.

Illegal immigration is a problem in this country. There’s lots of it from Mexico because of our shared border. There are plenty of great Mexican immigrants, and I’m sure examples of illegal Mexican immigrants who have benefited our society. But on the whole, Trump is basically right. We can’t tolerate illegal immigration. It’s damaging our economy. We can’f afford it. And some of our cities bending over backwards to be “tolerant” of illegal immigrants, even those who are criminals, just caused a lovely young woman in San Francisco her life.

Racism would be don’t let Mexicans (or fill in the blank) into the USA, not don’t let illegal immigrants from Mexico (or fill in the blank) into the USA. Trump only said the latter.
