Our correspondent, Fiona Lempres, is a fourth-grader at Sacred Heart Schools Lower School in Atherton.
For its fifth annual National Night Out, Atherton hosted an event in Holbrook-Palmer Park to build community, meet safety officers, and generally have fun.
There was music of all kinds and food galore including nachos, hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, snow cones, and cotton candy. There were also at least two bouncy houses and face painting.
La Entrada student Bridget Robinson said, “This event is really cool. It’s awesome that the whole community can come together, meet each other and make new friends.”
Later in the evening, with merely a gush of roaring wind to announce it, a helicopter landed. The California Highway Patrol allowed everyone to take pictures and sit in the helicopter.
While all of this is happening locally, other towns and cities all over the nation are standing against crime by showing criminals “we are united!”
Summing up the night, Atherton Police Chief Steve McCulley said, “This important event is a chance to celebrate the police department and to say thank you, but more importantly for us to thank you for being such good residents. It is our pleasure to serve you.”
