The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula reported the suspected embezzlement of approximately $200,000 by an employee, according to the Menlo Park Police Department.

Police said the report, made on May 4, alleges that funds were taken over the past 14 months from the nonprofit, which is headquartered in Menlo Park. 

The investigation is ongoing and has been referred to Menlo Park detectives for further review, according to police.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula is part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America network and provides after-school and summer programming for young people across San Mateo County, focusing on underserved communities. The local chapter serves approximately 6,700 children annually across 26 school sites, including campuses in Menlo Park, East Palo Alto and Redwood City, and operates four clubhouse locations countywide, According to the organization.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula (BGCP) holds itself to the highest standards of ethical conduct and does not tolerate inappropriate or illegal behavior of any kind,” a spokesperson said. “The employee referenced in your inquiry is no longer with the organization. BGCP has reported this matter to law enforcement and is cooperating fully with their investigation.”

The spokesperson declined to comment further. 

No arrests have been announced, and police have not released additional details identifying the employee or explaining how the alleged embezzlement was carried out.
