Update: As of the morning of Tuesday, June 11, the city of Menlo Park updated the timing for the Willow/Newbridge signal shutdown to Sunday, June 23, 7 p.m. to Monday, June 24, 1 p.m.

The city of Menlo Park has announced that the traffic signal at Willow Road and Newbridge Street will be shut down from Sunday, June 23, 7 p.m. to Monday, June 24, 1 p.m. to support signal operation and equipment upgrades on Newbridge Street.

During the shut off, the intersection will remain open, but operate as a four-way stop.

Monday morning, June 24, commuters will likely experience “major traffic impacts,” according to a city webpage about the project. Residents are encouraged to use alternative routes to access Highway 101 during the signal shut off, such as Marsh Road or University Avenue.

The shut off is taking place so the city can update signals and upgrade equipment. The pedestrian signals on Newbridge Street will be reconfigured to separate the timing of pedestrians crossing the street from cars turning left onto the street. No changes will be made to Willow Road.

“The new Newbridge Street signal operation will allow pedestrians to cross Willow Road without the danger of facing left-turning vehicles,” said Kevin Chen, a senior transportation engineer for Menlo Park, in an email to this news organization.

These changes are taking place as part of the Belle Haven Traffic Calming Plan, which is being implemented as part of Menlo Park’s Vision Zero initiative. The Vision Zero Action Plan aims to eliminate traffic fatalities, and cut major injuries in half by 2030.

Menlo Park began construction on traffic calming measures in Belle Haven in late 2023, and since then many of the improvements have already been completed such as new curb extensions, speed bumps and bollard installations.

“The Willow/Newbridge intersection change is one of the final updates within the plan,” said Chen.
