Applications open for Menlo Park Parks and Recreation Commission
Menlo Park is seeking applicants for a vacancy on the Parks and Recreation Commission through July 31 at 5 p.m. The commission is responsible for advising the City Council on matters related to Menlo Park’s recreation programs and facilities.
Its priorities are to assess and provide feedback, modify existing programs and facilities to meet evolving community needs and to participate in planning and regional coordination on park facilities.
All applicants must be 18 years or older, a Menlo Park resident and committed to attending monthly scheduled meetings. The application can be found on menlopark.gov/Government/Commissions.
Local Girl Scout creates financial literacy program for sixth graders
Menlo-Atherton High School senior Simran Patel received a Girl Scout Gold Award for creating a financial literacy program for Hillview sixth graders. Patel’s project aims to introduce students to money management skills at an early age through interactive activities, real-world scenarios and engaging lessons.
Noticing a gap in financial literacy resources for middle school students, Patel designed and brought the program to life and successfully pitched it to Hillview administrators. The project granted her the highest Girl Scout honor recognizing leadership and community impact.
Patel was also awarded the Girl Scout Pinnacle Award, which is presented to Girl Scouts who have completed all three of the organization’s highest milestones: the bronze, silver and gold award.
La Honda hazardous waste drop-off
Residents of La Honda can book an appointment to drop off hazardous waste materials such as old paint, batteries and household chemicals at San Mateo County Health’s drop-off event on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
