State Sen. Josh Becker, D-Menlo Park, has been appointed as chair of the Senate Committee on Energy Utilities and Communications by Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire, according to a press release from Becker’s office on Monday, Jan. 6.

In his position as chair, Becker will be prioritizing initiatives aimed at lowering energy costs for California residents, expanding clean energy production and ensuring regulations promote an equitable energy system. For over two decades, Becker has been an advocate for clean energy solutions and has been recognized as a dedicated state leader in combatting climate change, according to the press release.

“At a time when energy policy will determine not only California’s environmental future but also its economic resilience, I am committed to advancing clean energy, affordability, and balanced, effective regulations,” said Becker in a prepared statement. “Leading this committee is a responsibility I take very seriously, and I look forward to collaborating with all stakeholders to drive meaningful progress.”

Although the state carries a strong reputation in climate leadership, the state is not meeting its climate goals, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% below 1990 levels in the next five years.

“California’s leadership in clean energy and innovation is undeniable, but we must do more to build a future where every resident benefits from our progress,” Becker said. “By focusing on affordability, fostering innovation, and promoting equity, we can create an energy future that is not only cleaner and more reliable but also inclusive of all communities.”

Becker plans to work with Gov. Gavin Newson, industry leaders and legislative colleagues to accelerate efforts toward these goals, according to the release.
