One day later and it was business as usual for the Menlo School girls’ tennis team.
Tricia Zhang did not drop a game in winning her match at No. 1 singles as the Knights beat visiting Crystal Springs Uplands, 7-0, in a West Bay Athletic League contest Friday.
Menlo (2-1, 1-1) had its state-record 266-dual match winning streak in league play halted by Harker on Thursday.
Menlo coach Bill Shine used the occasion to honor his present and former athletes.
“What an unbelievable run by all the players over this time, including this year’s team,” Shine said. I’m the lucky one.”
The four Menlo singles players dropped a combined five games, each winning in straight sets. Brynn Brady, Natalie Westermann and Charlotte Yao each handled their opponents.
The No. 3 doubles team of Lindsey Canessa and Emily Han worked to pull out a 7-6 (4), 5-7, 7-3 victory, the only match that went three sets.
The doubles teams of Sofia Labatt and C.C. Golub and Siena Brady and Penelope Anderson produced straight-set wins.
Menlo has won 267 of 268 dual matches in league play under Shine.
“We have been very lucky over the years with the commitment of the players to ‘team first’ mentality,” Shine said. “Both the girls and the boys lost a league match before I came to Menlo and it didn’t sit well with them. So, we changed the culture.”
Water polo
Both the Sacred Heart Prep boys’ and girls’ teams beat visiting St. Francis in nonleague matches on Friday.
Jack Vort and Gavin West each scored three times to lead the Gators (2-0) while Andrew Plaschke contributed four assists. Goalies Griffen Price and Wyatt Stenson combined on seven saves.
SHP took control of the contest with seven unanswered goals in the second period.
The Sacred Heart Prep girls beat the Lancers 10-7 in their season opener as Megan Norris recorded 10 saves and added an assist.
Ella Woodhead led SHP with four goals and Alexandra Szczerba recorded three assists. Ashley Penner and Eleanor Facey each added a pair of goals.
