Justin Pretre finished fifth in the individual race of the Roughrider Invitational in Fresno on Friday, helping the Menlo boys cross country team place third as a team.
Pretre completed the 5,000-meter race in 16:31.6. Oakdale’s Caleb Cavanaugh won the race in 16:11.0. There were 234 runners who completed the course.
Menlo scored 77 points, finishing behind Piedmont (60) and Oakdale (74) as 27 schools competed in the Small Schools Division.
Several Knight runners ran personal-bests and, for some, their first run at Woodward Park, the site of the state championship meet.
Freshman Landon Pretre was seventh in 16:41.5 Junior Aiden Deffner took 16th in 17:27.8 and senior Nik Khuntia 18th in 17:29.9. Sophomore Alex Boesch crossed the finish 31st in 18:01.4 and freshman Will Hauser 53rd in 18:33.9.
Castilleja finished third overall in the Small Schools Division, scoring 89. Bishop Amat won with 57 and Miramonte was second with 58.
Perry McElhinney placed seventh to lead Casti. She raced 19:40.4. Samira Kennedy was 10th in 20:07.4, followed by Daniella Henderson in 17th (20:24.8), Abigail Krenz in 31st (21:21.6), Zoe Lee in 42nd (22:03.6), Naya Sangoram (22:27.7) and Madison Ringham (24:45.6).

Four Menlo girls ran the Small School varsity race with senior Grace Tang the team’s top finisher in 32nd in 21:23.2. Freshmen Eden Chuang was 41st in 22:03.1, Audrey Tsao 48th in 22:22.9 and Ruiqi Liu in 25:24.9 in a field of 181 runners.
