Sergio Beltran tied a Central Coast Section record for most touchdown passes in the regular season in the first minute of Friday night’s 55-17 Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division win over Carlmont that gave Menlo School the division title.
He broke the mark in the final minute of the first half in helping Menlo complete an undefeated league season. The Knights (9-0, 6-0) go for an unbeaten regular season next Saturday afternoon when Sacred Heart Prep visits for the annual Valpo Bowl.
Beltran threw three touchdown passes and has 43 on the season as he surpassed the previous standard of 41 set by Monta Vista’s Ryan Hancock in 1989. (Hancock went on to pitch briefly in the major leagues with the California Angels). Beltran also ran for three touchdowns.
“With the game, it’s a lot of reaction and adrenaline, so you don’t really remember the play a lot. I just remember the touchdown and I went to the sideline and every single teammate and coach was congratulating me, ” Beltran said. “It just meant so much, I mean they’re my teammates and they’ve been with me through ups and downs, through every single situation and I love them. I’m very lucky to have them.”

Beltran finished with 279 yards on 17 of 25 passes. He added 95 rushing yards on 10 carries.
“That’s just a credit to how good Sergio is and how well we’re coached,” said Menlo receiver Tyler Flynn, who caught the record-setting touchdown, a 20-yard completion with 49 seconds left in the second quarter. “Our team has really come together. We’ve got each other’s back. We’ve got some confidence; we trust each other and it shows on the field.”
Carter Jung caught the record-matching touchdown in the game’s first 57 seconds. He took a pass from Beltran and raced 88 yards for the score.
Beltran scored on runs of 6, 3 and 28 yards and tossed a 3-yard TD pass to Jack Giesler.
Junior Ty Richardson scooped up a fumble and went 77 yards for a score and junior quarterback Jake Bianchi helped finish the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Robby Enright.
