Redwood City police are investigating two cases that occurred over the weekend, a shooting and an unattended death, the department said Wednesday.
On Saturday, just before midnight, police received a report of a gunshot victim who arrived at a local emergency room. Officers went to the hospital and spoke with the victim, a 20-year-old man from Redwood City.
The man told investigators that he was sitting in a vehicle when he was shot by an unknown suspect. Though he told police it happened in Redwood City, the exact location of the shooting has not yet been determined, police said. The man was treated for the gunshot wound and is expected to survive.
On Sunday at about 2:30 a.m., officers responded to a report of an unconscious person in the 1900 block of Broadway. A civilian had discovered a man in a pool of blood in the driveway of a sub-level parking structure with obvious head trauma, police said. First responders arrived and he was declared deceased at the scene.
The man was later identified by the coroner’s office as 40-year-old Hugo Garcia Varela. The coroner’s office did not know his city of residence and has not determined a cause of death.
According to police, there is a strong likelihood that Garcia Varela fell from the ground level to the lower level of the parking garage entrance, but his death remains under investigation.
It is unclear whether the two incidents are connected.
Anyone with helpful information about either of the cases is encouraged to contact the Redwood City Police Department at (650) 780-7100.
