Bill Walsh, who won three Super Bowls in the 1980s as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, died Monday morning of leukemia at his Woodside home.
He had disclosed about a year ago that he had the disease.
Walsh guided the 49ers to six NFC West division titles in his 10 years as head coach. His career record in the NFL was 102 wins, 63 defeats, and one tie.
Walsh also coached the Stanford University football team in 1977-78 and again from 1992 to 1994. In 2005 he served as interim athletic director at Stanford until current athletic director Bob Bowlsby was hired.
Walsh, who graduated from San Jose State University, kept an office at Stanford and threw open his doors to whomever wanted to enter.
His wife, Geri, and two children, Craig and Elizabeth, survive him. His son Steve died of leukemia at age 46 in 2002.
